Validations

Earthquake-resistant structures

Groningen experiences gas extraction-induced earthquakes, which has led to stricter requirements for both existing and new buildings. To meet these standards, the VORM4 team invested in the most advanced calculation method: the non-linear time history analysis. This approach enables us to assess e.g. masonry structures, wooden structures and the associated connectings for their earthquake resistance and progression of the behaviour up to eventual collapses.

 Validation Process:

Our dedicated team carries out intensive validations at different levels:

o  Phase 1 (In-plane analyses): Thorough assessment of structural elements, forces in the longitudinal direction of the wall surface.

o  Phase 2 (Out-of-plane analyses): In-depth analysis of structural elements, forces perpendicular to the wall surface.

o  Phase 3 (Roof structure dynamic and quasi-static test): Detailed calibration of the dynamic response of roof structures.

o  Phase 4 (Complete build): Full integration of all components for comprehensive validation.

Laboratory Test and Calibration:

Our validation work is aimed at reproducing laboratory test results in a computational analytical model. The material models are carefully calibrated and the numerical models refined with practical data, including existing crack patterns, geometrical anomalies, and other pertinent factors, enabling the analysis of crack progression over time, occurring displacements and forces.

 Approval and Results:

The analysis results, compared to the actual laboratory results, ensure the validity of the method. Due to these efforts, our team received approval to conduct time history analyses for e.g. Dutch governmental agencies.
